Batticaloa situated on the East coast of Sri Lanka has an interesting history of its own. The Old Portuguese/Dutch Fort which had its beginnings in 1628 commands the lagoon. Batticaloa is also home to a minority Burgher community, descendants from the Portuguese.

The Batticaloa lagoon is the centrepiece of this complex, multi ethnic town. Batticaloa is also famous for the legendary singing fish under the historic Kallady bridge.
